Four maps with different moods

The city gives you wide streets and leafy suburbs to drive through. The Moon swaps that for low gravity and a view of space. The countryside has hills, rocks you can jump off and an area set aside for destruction, and the test area is filled with ramps, presses and plenty of props to experiment with. Each one suits a different kind of driving, from a relaxed cruise to launching the car off something high.

Damage you can see

Wrecking cars is a big part of the appeal. Bodywork crumples, doors and wheels can come off and windows shatter, and parts of the surroundings can be destroyed as well, which sets off explosions. A battered car does not end the session: R resets it and K restores it, so you can get straight back to driving. Pressing B slows time down, which is ideal for watching a big smash play out in slow motion.

Paint, wheels and modes

Customisation goes further than a colour swap. You can paint every part of your car and adjust the wheels’ camber, height and size, so two copies of the same model can look and sit quite differently. The vehicle list runs past 15 and covers sedans, SUVs and trucks as well as special cars. When you are ready, choose racing if you want a contest, or the sandbox if you simply want to drive freely.

Getting the most from it

A few habits help. Use the nitro on Shift for moments when you want extra speed, such as the run-up to a ramp. The ramps in the test area and the rocks in the countryside are the natural spots for big jumps, and on the Moon the low gravity keeps the car in the air for longer. If a view feels awkward, C changes the camera until you find one that suits you.
