About Shooter games

In a shooter, where you stand matters almost as much as how straight you shoot. Roughly 250 games make up this category. General shooters account for about 90, and first-person shooters, where you see the action through your character's eyes, add another 60 or so. Tank games come to almost 30 and sniper games to about 25, the latter built around one careful shot from a distance. Target shooting, zombie waves, archery, hunting, robots and a few aircraft titles make up the rest.

The tone varies widely. Funny Shooter 2 is a comic first-person game against waves of bizarre creatures, with gear to upgrade and special weapons to trade for. Strykon plays it straighter, with deathmatch, team deathmatch and free-for-all modes and weapons from pistols to sniper rifles. Trap the Convoy is barely a shooter at all: you mine a mountain road and stop an army convoy before any truck reaches your fortress.

How long you have should guide the pick. A sniper level or an archery round fits neatly into a coffee break. Games with upgrade shops and unlockable weapons ask for more, because the reward comes from building up your kit over many rounds. First-person games usually move with WASD and aim with the mouse; on a phone, the top-down and side-view shooters are the easier place to start. All of them are free and run in an ordinary browser tab, with no game client to download.
